Contoh Review Text - The Heretic's Daughter

The Heretic's Daughter
A Novel
 by Kathleen Kent

368 pages.

review by : Diska Amanda

I absolutely love this novel, and this book will always hold a special place in my heart. Kathleen Kent's novel, from the perspective of young Sarah Carrier, was moving and informative. The Salem witch trials, and that time in history, were obviously well researched by Kent and written so that the reader can see and feel what the characters lived through.

The story happened quite a long time ago, when people were easily suspicious of everything and easily intimidated. It happened to Sarah carrier and her family and some unlucky people who were blamed by others for something they didn’t do.
Sarah and her family lived in the city of Andover, New England. She was only about ten years old when she realized that people living around their house were not really welcoming her family. Things got worse when her mother was arrested and sent to jail because of something she didn’t commit. She was accused of practicing black magic just because some women said so. They pretended to suffer from some kind of disease and pointed out that it was Martha Carrier’s doing. Following her mother, Richard, Sarah’s oldest brother was also sent to jail. Later on, even Sarah and her brothers Andrew and Tom were also put behind bars. It hurt Sarah when her mother asked her to admit that her mother was indeed practicing black magic. Her mother then was sentenced to death and Sarah and her brothers were released. So many years later, Sarah finally found out why her mother admitted being guilty of practicing black magic. Read the book and you’ll find a touching story of how much a mother loved her family so dearly.
